The Tragedy Of Euripides Medea And Ovid s ...
Introduction Retribution is a monster of appetite, eternally bloodthirsty and never filled. Rage, resentment and envy does not change the heart of others. A massive success is the best revenge for a woman. It is the only way to get back at someone for a pain they have caused. In Euripidesââ¬â¢ Medea and Ovidââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ Metamorphoses, Medea and Juno exhibit vengeance to defend their dignity. Primary Source In Euripidesââ¬â¢ Medea, Medea is very furious because Juno left her and her children to remarry the princess. Medea does not accept the betrayal and demands punishment for leaving her after all she has done for him. Creon is aware ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m afraid of you. You could hurt my daughter, even kill her. Every indication points that wayâ⬠(793). Medea knew she was going to exile and pretended to be a victim and swore that all she said was just out of anger. Little did the king know that she had a vicious plan to kill his daughter and Creon as well. Medea indeed got what she wanted. She obtained revenged by killing her children on top of the bride and the king.ââ¬Å"Forget your children. Afterward youââ¬â¢ll grieve. For even if you kill them, they were yours; you loved them. Iââ¬â¢m a woman cursed by fortuneâ⬠(817). This shows how woman did not have power over their children. Medeaââ¬â¢s husband was the owner and thatââ¬â¢s why she killed them because her ch ildren were not in reality hers, she just gave birth to them. Junoââ¬â¢s Primary Source In Ovidââ¬â¢ Metamorphoses, Juno is a woman of a lot of dignity. She does not let

Puritan-vs-Diest thinking free essay sample
Models of Living Puritan religion and eighteenth century Deist thinking are two different movements. The ideas expressed in each of these movements follow the same guidelines but with different principles when describing how one should act through their daily lives. Whether it be through following the expectations of God or through self Improvement, Puritan and Deist thinking go through different ways to live by to be the best person one should be.The Puritan way of life was a religious way of hinging that was driven by one underlining thought, God rules all. To be more specific Puritans expressed God as a way of life where scriptures alone reveal the divine origin. This origin is that God was the creator of the earth and decides all the good; everyone should strive to live their lives through faith as described In scripture. With this notion and way of life one would have a contract with God, living every day to show their faith to Him. Everything that happens is done because God wanted it as if He were testing the faith of the individual. As authors began to produce more rating on Puritan talking they were written as poems, sermons, and narratives. Authors such as John Winthrop, Anne Broadsheet, and Michael Highlighters were all Puritans who had different methods expressing the word of God, faith, and the religious aspect of the Puritan model of living. John Winthrop, a lawyer by trade, used the Puritan way of teaching as a objective approach to live by In A Model of Christian charity. Winthrop poses questions In certain situations that have dealt with every day issues. Each question is followed by a solution where at times a rebuttal is even given to questions that may have different outcomes. In this way Winthrop explains his model as questioning and answering ways of life and merely quoting scripture as his proof to explain reasoning. One life model that he lists is to Do good to all, especially to the household of faith (Winthrop 168) and proves this statement with more scripture, If thin Enemy hungry, feed him, Love your enemies , do good to them that you, Matthew:5. 44 (Winthrop 168).At the end of Winthrop back and forth of life decisions he states, Therefore let us choose life, that we and our seed may live by obeying his voice (Winthrop 177), which summarizes that in daily life one shall allow the expectations that God has set as a way of life. Broadsheet then expresses how faith should be taken, even when God Inflicts pain, In her three elegies to her grandchildren. In these poems she uses her faith as a way to attempt to avoid sorrow for their deaths, Is by His hand alone that guides nature and fate. (Broadsheet 230, 14).Through each elegy that Broadsheet writes her pain and grief grows stronger while each poem gets shorter. Although the pain increases, Broadsheet brought herself back to faith by stating, He will return and make up for all our losses, And smile again after our bitter crosses. (Broadsheet 231 , 9-10). Broadsheet goes through a 1 OFF Broadsheet uses the Puritan way of thinking and embraces faith towards God to keep going through life. Lastly Weightlessnesss Day of Doom, depicts the fate that could be shown by the hand of God if you did not exercise Pursuits seriously in day to day life. The use of fear was the main strategy to preach the religion, They cry, they roar for anguish sore Depart to hell, there may you yell and roar eternally. (Highlighters 253, 1635-1640) Eighteen-century Deist thinking was a movement that did not follow the previous religious movement of Pursuits. This religious movement believed in the existence of God, but did not follow his teachings laid out by scripture. Instead it was the belief that God left the world in the hands of man to control the outcomes. The Laws of Nature, physics, science, and other types of analysis methods were ideas that help back Deist thinking. The enlightenment period of deism had the promise of solving personal, intellectual, social, political, and spiritual problems (Vine 83). Puritans greatly disliked this method of life because it directly inverted their own beliefs that unlocking the rules of the world was in Gods own hands, not by ours. Writers such as Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson contributed to this new upcoming way of thinking. Benjamin Franklin in The Autobiography put together a new model of life in which to follow. The idea behind this came from looking critically to his ancestors, developing ideas with an ordering system and then testing his theory to reach a conclusion. In his model he sets forth a model of living to live with the greatest possible potential through self improvement; It was about this time that I conceive the bold and arduous Project of arriving at moral Perfection (Franklin 534). The self improvement that Franklin suggests is a daily routine that uses critical thinking and analysis to determine how well ones life is.One should strive to hold values of virtue to thirteen different elements which includes things such as silence, order, and humility. All these types of virtues must be improved day by day in order to improve ones life. Jefferson then contributes his effort in the Deist movement with The Declaration of Independence. With the laws of nature and of natures God entitled them Requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. (663) Here Jefferson uses this document to describe the existence of God but to further describe that God gave the earth to mankind. With the earths outcomes in the hands of man they are entitled to change the effects they have on it. Jefferson does this by saying By their creator with inherent and inalienable rights. .. To secure these rights governments are instituted among men (663). Jefferson is proven a Deist thinker because he uses this statement to explain that the establishment of a government is the right of man given by God. Puritan thinking and the eighteenth-century Deist thinking conflicted in many ways.Although both acknowledged the existence of God, it was only through the Puritan model of living that used the teachings of God to explain that what happens is through His actions. On the other hand Deist thinking believes that Go left the earth to mankind and it is by the actions of man they can pursue their own way of life. This is viewed through the literature in those times as well. Puritan texts has great influence on faith in God and using scripture as proof of how to fulfill your day to day life, such as Winthrop work. In turn Franklin describes a way of living where you give yourself self guide to happiness through order.

Managing In an Inclusive Environment Discrimination
Introduction The use of machinery was developed to replace human resource in the industry, however, despite the development; human resource is inevitable because of the various operations that cannot be handled by the machines.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Managing In an Inclusive Environment: Discrimination specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Thus human resource is an important aspect of the business organization which should be carefully handled if at all the organization wants to catch up with the global competition (Armstrong, 1999, p.143). The human resource managers are therefore faced with a big challenge of making sure that their employees get the best from the organization so that they can equally perform well. Among the major concerns of the human resource managers is ensuring that their employees do not undergo discrimination in their work place. This paper is therefore an analysis of the current issue s related to employment discrimination that the HR mangers ought to be aware of and thereafter a recommendation of the actions to be taken by the HR mangers to avoid discrimination. Current (timely) issues related to employment discrimination that HR managers need to be aware of Employment discrimination entails creation of a distinction between the employees so that some of them are disadvantaged as others become advantaged during the times of recruitment, termination, promotion among other human resource processes. Discrimination in the work place can take many forms such as sex, race, age, physical and mental disability, religion and political differences. It could also take different directions, in that discrimination could either come from the employer or from the other working staff of higher or even lower ranks (Hemphill, and Haines, 1998, p.4). The fact that discrimination can take many forms; it is therefore the obligation of the human resource managers to beware of any pos sible causes and instances of the discrimination within the work place. Some of the issue that could lead to discrimination and the human resource mangers ought to be informed of include; Job advertisementââ¬â During the publication of a job vacancy, the human resource managers have to be careful that the information provided does no indicate even the slightest sign of any form of discrimination. For example, unless the job is suited for males only, they should not indicate that they require only male applicants yet the females are able to perform the job. Job descriptionââ¬â This is a common instance where discrimination is likely to occur once the employee has accepted the job. Most employers have recently been advertising jobs without or with less information on the job description and thereafter overloading the employee with many duties to perform (Hemphill, and Haines, 1998, p.4). To avoid this, the HR officers should make the job description available even during inte rviews so that the employee may be in a position to know what they are up to. Application forms- This again is an issue of concern in that the forms to be filled may be indicating instances of discrimination thus disadvantaging a certain group of people. Interviewsââ¬â The human resource mangers conducting the interviews should be pretty ware of the legislation laws governing employees. They should therefore have made good plans and forethought before the interview. In addition, it is advisable to have an external interviewer so as to avoid incidences of discrimination. Occupational safety and health requirements- The employers ought to be responsible for the health and safety of their employees in the workplace. Despite the employee differences, all should be safeguarded from any hazards and risks within the workplace. Apart from the aforementioned issues, the human resources mangers should also ensure that other human resource responsibilities such as reward systems, training , performance appraisal are equally distributed or rather given on merit so as to avoid cases of discrimination in the work place. Recommended actions for HR managers to help them ensure on an ongoing basis that their organization is not engaging in such discrimination Discrimination of employees is a crime that is punishable in the court of law. This therefore calls for all employers as well as their human resource managers to avoid any possible instances of discrimination set they are persecuted (Garcez, 2006, p.1). Not only will the company spend huge sums of money in the case, but they will also create a bad image in the society which will destroy their good reputation. There are several recommended ways through which the human resources can avoid instances of discrimination in their work place. Some of these include;Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Use of best practices decisions during the process of recruiting, promotion, retrenchment, or layoffs Due to the fact that these processes are some of the instances during which discrimination could occur, the human resource mangers ought to be careful when carrying out these obligations. The best way of avoiding this is through use of a variety of techniques of hiring or recruiting new employees such as open houses, recruitment firms or even scholar programs. Decisions to promote or lay off workers should be based on satisfactory or unsatisfactory work respectively and not on language or race differences. Taking the appropriate procedures to prevent or correct discrimination instances The human resource managers should follow the requirements of the EEOC that require that every organization should have a discrimination policy which both the employers and employees should sign. The EEOC officers offer training and guidance on the course of action to be taken in instances of discrimination. This therefor e ensures that once both parties sign and attest to the policy each is responsible for any consequences that arise if the policy is gone against (Garcez, 2006, p.1). Equal treatment of the employees Since most organizations will consist of people from different races, religions, geographical locations among other differences it is important that the human resource managers treat all the employees in the same way. The only differences that should be present in the organization should be in terms of the ranks or positions whereby there are those who have authority over others. This authority should however b e confused and used as a point of discriminating others. Conclusion From the above discussion on current issues that the human resource managers should be aware of concerning discrimination in the work place, it can be deduced that discrimination is something that could occur even without the HR mangers noticing. And since discrimination is a criminal offence punishable in the cou rt of law, the human resource managers should be careful when performing their daily errands to avoid discriminating their employees (Legge, 2004, p.102). Given the aforementioned recommendations of preventing discrimination in the organizations, it is thus possible to achieve a discrimination free global work place. This will therefore ensure that employees are free to work in any organization without the fear of being discriminated. Reference List Armstrong, M. (1999). Colonial Ideologies of American Society essays
Colonial Ideologies of American Society essays One of the central and most enduing foundational ideologies in American culture is that of freedom, democracy and equality. The ideal and ideology of freedom from oppression and coercion began with the very founding of America in the fight for freedom from the colonial and territorial domination of the British. This historical experience has been a driving force within the American experience for the very beginning. However, the history of American ideology, like any nation and culture, is complex and often reveals opposing views and ideologies that are in conflict with one another. There is also a more conservative life-view and ideology that is part of the American cultural fabric. This ideological strand is essentially opposed to change and rejects diversity and the freedom and equality of all. This life-view is evident in the racist part of American history and in the history of the fight for civil rights and gender as well as class equality. Therefore American culture is characterized by two main and often contradictory ideologies that interact in a complex way and which have resulted in the intricate and intertwined historical experience of America. Many critics and commentators are of the opinion that the most pervasive ideology that has most characterized the American view of life is the idea that the country is a melting pot of peoples and cultures, which emphasizes the individuals right to freedom and equality under the law. This view relates to the early history of the country and the fact that much of the of the ethnic and cultural diversity of the country was as a result of immigration. As the main character in Israel Zangwill's 1908 play, The Melting-Pot says, America is God's Crucible, where all the races of Europe are melting and reforming....Germans, Frenchmen, Irishmen and Englishmen, Jews and Russiansinto the Crucible with you all! God is making the American." ( Grestle G.) Thes...

Week 2 Individual Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Week 2 Individual Paper - Essay Example The formulas of financial ratios combine the variables of the financial statements. For example the return of equity formula is calculated in the following manner: net income / shareholders equity. Net income is a variable that is found in the income statement, while shareholders equity is an element from the balance sheet. Two financial statements whose elements interact with each other are the income statement and the statement of retained earnings. The total net income illustrated at the bottom of the income statement is a figure that is added to the initial retained earnings balance. Another relationship of interaction among the elements of the statements is between the statement of retained earnings and the balance sheet. The ending retained earnings balance illustrated at the bottom of statement of retained earnings is the same figure that is shown in the equity section of the balance sheet. Changes in one financial statement can affect the other financial statement in certain circumstances. The net income total is used in the statement of retained earnings as a variable that is added to the initial retained earnings balance. For example if a company ended with a year-end net losses that figure would set off a chain reaction which affects other financial statements. The losses are moved to the statement of retained earnings where they are subtracted from the initial retained earnings balance. The final retained earnings balance is then transferred to the balance sheet. Not all changes to accounts in one financial statement affect the other. For instance a change in the debt total in the balance sheet does not affect the income statement in any way. It is important for business professionals to understand the relationship between the four financial statements. The statements together provide a picture of the financial health of an enterprise. A person can make an error analyzing a
